Miley's top ten covers, ranked
Updated: Nov 26, 2020
1. Jolene (Dolly Parton Cover) The Backyard Sessions
Arguably, the cover to end all others. Made lovelier by their pure adoration for one another, this godmother/daughter combo of pure country twang is about as good as it gets. Miley is vocally fucking peaking in every capacity here. Jolene is a fan favourite and critically acclaimed (at least in the 78000 YouTube comments) cover.

2. Heart of Glass (Blondie Cover) iHeart Radio
Single-handedly saving 2020 with a mullet in tow, it’s Miley’s world and we’re all just living in it. This outfit and performance are absolutely top notch and in covering such an iconic yet vocally demanding song, Miley really brought home the bacon (I can say that she’s not vegan anymore thx). Thank fuck it’s on streaming services.
3. Wildflowers (Tom Petty Cover) Spotify Studios NYC
Whether you’re listening to this eargasm through Spotify or her cover on the Howard Stern Show in 2017, Tom Petty’s ‘Wildflowers’ is magical. Her range excels here and this song is a calm, beautiful folky rendition. Perfect for listening to on a rainy day while doing a poo, making pancakes or staring out a bus window trying to regain strength for yet another 9-5.
4. Lilac Wine (Jeff Buckley Cover) The Backyard Sessions
The Backyard Sessions are without a shred of a doubt her best performances, however, for the benefit of mixing it up a lil bit I have spread them in amongst some other stellar performances, mostly to create some suspense. I had never heard this Buckley song until Miley came along and blew it out of the water, making it difficult to enjoy the original in all of its glory. It is THE perfect sunset and cheeseboard song.
5. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack Cover) BBC Live Lounge
This BBC Live Lounge set during her promotional tour of ‘Younger Now’ is a fucking LOOK. Vocally dominating, great hair, studio backdrop with accessories and boots that have more personality than my entire being, this set is a lasting vibe. Slow and steady, this cover showcases her control, range and is quite a different vocal approach for Miley. A personal favourite.
6. Gimme More (Britney Spears Cover) MTV Backyard Sessions Feat. The Social Distancers
In preparation for the release of Plastic Hearts, the only thing wrong with this cover is that it spans less than three minutes. The outfit is a fucking winner here too, and always really. Her cover of Communication from this same session is also to die for.
7. Take It To The Limit (The Eagles Cover) BBC Live Lounge
I love the Eagles, but had very little time for Take it to the Limit until Miley’s rendition, released only a couple of months ago. Performed as a dedication to her Grandma who tragically died this year, Miley’s country air breathes new life into this classic hit.

8. Look What They’ve Done To My Song (Melanie Cover) The Backyard Sessions
Mm, Backyard Sessions. Enough said.
9. No Tears Left to Cry (Ariana Grande Cover) BBC Live Lounge
The only reason I actually know the lyrics to this Ariana Grande hit, is thanks to Miley’s breakdown of this song during her promo tour for ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’. The classical edge applied to this fast-paced billboard hit mixes the entire vibe of the song up, with her vocals shining through surprisingly well when grappling with a very pop hit.

10. New York State of Mind (Duet with Billy Joel) The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
New York State of Mind is one of the most romantic songs on my Spotify, it was played daily prior to Miley’s duet with the man, the myth, the legend: Billy Joel. Although not technically a cover, this duet is special. Performed at Madison Square Garden, Miley blows the band off the stage with her incredible range and takes hold of this iconic theme song with ease, a love letter to the greatest city in the world.
